NEWS - HARMOS GUITARS

About Us

"Harmos" means connecting point, and is the root for the word - harmony. The Harmos Space Frame Guitar joins form with structure and structure with sound for mechanical, visual and acoustic beauty.

Harmos Music, Ltd. is here to design, develop and build space frame based musical instruments for the adventurous musician who wants a unique instrument with amazing versatility and tonal strength. We use a combination of the latest carbon fiber materials and structural design geometry to build easy to play, light weight, affordable instruments with transparent tone and ultra-long sustain.

Harmos has created the world's first carbon fiber bodied steel guitar, and currently makes the only carbon fiber lap steel guitar available.

T. Sage Harmos

Sage was born in Billings Montana (1961) and grew up in Boulder Colorado, in love with music and fascinated by machines. The steel guitar is where those interests met. When he took up the steel in 1987, Sage also had an interest in Bucky Fuller's geometry.

"The debate in the steel guitar community over the role that mass plays in tone quality caught my attention. Most folks were saying that an instrument had to be massive in order to have good tone. I had a feeling that it had more to do with rigidity, and efficient transfer of string energy than raw mass alone. Some mass is required, obviously- what is there just has to be in the right place."

Over a period of ten years Sage nurtured the design and development of the structural space frame steel. The first prototype (completed in 1998) weighed two and a half pounds. In 2001 he started getting the guitar into the world, where it has been well received by some great players.

Sage studied Industrial Technology at Colorado State University. He has two beautiful children, a daughter and son. Sage lives in Boulder.

James Baecker

James has a technology background that includes an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, 10 years working in product development and engineering management and 13 years in product engineering, manufacturing and International customer service (including several years living in the Middle East and Far East).

He enjoys athletics and has a passion for ancient stories and storytelling. He lives with his wife, two children and goldfish in Deephaven, Minnesota.

Both the 2004 Grammys and Harmos Steel Guitars have musicians - Robert Randolph, Joe Perry and Jerry Douglas as musical supporters !

HARMOS Players at 2004 Grammys:
HARMOS Steel Guitar players were prominently represented at the 2004 Grammys held on February 4th. Predominant was Robert Randolph and the Family Band in their live breakout appearance as part of the show's Tribute to Funk. RRFB showcased their raucus good-time style and steel guitar virtuosity. RRFB was nominated for two Grammys this year.

HARMOS MUSIC salutes these fine players. Congratulations! We continue to be pleased and gratified that these world class musicians provide their professional support to our unique Steel Guitar. Like the artists who play it, the HARMOS Steel Guitar is a truly world class instrument, with the voice, clarity, balance, sustain and wide range of capabilities players want who are looking for the edge.
Rocker Joe Perry of Aerosmith was also on-stage at the 2004 Grammys with B.B. King and Steven Tyler to present the Best Rap Artist award. B.B., who recently turned 77, expressed his tribute to Aerosmith by saying that "I been listening to Aerosmith since I was young." Aerosmith was nominated for one Grammy this year.

And folk/country Dobro-steeler Jerry Douglas won Grammys again, this year, winning two Grammys as featured artist with Alison Krauss + Union Station. This brings Jerry's Grammy total to seven (or is that eight?)

Hear & Now NEW, page 68, December 2002

Tubular Harmos Steel Guitars has released the Harmos Lap Steel ($1,275 to $1,395). The instruments have a carbon-fiber space frame design that makes them resonant, lightweight, strong, and less sensitive to weather changes. A tetrahedraloctet structure pioneered by R. Buckminster Fuller provides instrument strength with a minimum of mass. This design also eliminates dead spots, and the combination of wood endboards and carbon-fiber body balance each other to reduce sensitivity to temperature and humidity effects. All Harmos guitars are keyless, made of extruded carbon-fiber tube, and come with two single-coil pickups on a four-way rotary switch with onboard volume and tone control. Several selections of pickups and wood endboard materials are available. The Harmos Lap Steel comes in four models: Sacred Steel, Americana, Hawaiian, and HonkyTonk. harmosmusic.com

Review in Total Guitar
http://www.totalguitar.co.uk/

Appears in the upcoming January 2003 / Issue #105 of Total Guitar

Imagine a pedal steel guitar and a complex molecular structure getting jiggy in the pub car park after closing time. The resulting lovechild would look something like the Harmos Sacred Steel guitar. The carbon fibre struts that make the Sacred Steel look like it would be more at home in a science lab than a music room, are much lighter than the wooden body of your traditional lap steel, making it comfortable and well-balanced when sitting on your lap. These struts also contribute to its gorgeous tonal clarity and sustain.

Earlier models were hampered by tuning problems string tension caused the carbon fibre struts to sink slowly into the wooden endboards. Harmos' solution was to add a metal-tuning disc to the centre strut contact point. This spreads the string tension across more of the wood. Not only does it eliminate any tuning problems, it appears to enhance the tone of the Sacred Steel by bringing more of the wood into the sound.

The Sacred Steel doesn't have conventional tuning pegs, but what Harmos calls "tuning fingers". The string is tightened into a clamping screw with an Allen key, and then tuned by its own tuning screw, not unlike the method of tuning on a locking nut tremolo system. Being a bit of a traditionalist in these matters, I was surprised how easy it was use, and how accurately the guitar tuned.

The Harmos is powered by two pickups: a Tele bridge-style pickup in the front, and a P-90 sat not far behind it. These are operated by a four-way rotary knob situated on the endboard which enables the following tonal variations: neck pickup alone: bridge pickup alone: neck/bridge in parallel and neck/bridge in series. lt would be difficult not to be impressed by any one of these tones, but having four to choose from is a real treat. Putting the Harmos through its paces using my Fender Blues de Ville, with a little help from an NXR Dynal Comp, I was able to summon up limitless sustain and tonal nirvana. The tone control, which sits on the endboard near the four-way selector, has enough bass-to-treble sweep to muster up a convincing wah effect which sounds particularly nice when you hit a big fat chord.

This is a beautifully thought-out instrument and it's obvious that a lot of love and hard work has gone into its construction. If you're a devotee of lap steel or anything that slides, give it a try. You'll be impressed.
